The Best Day Trips from Phoenix - Travel by Brit

Phoenix attracts tourists across the country with its beautiful hiking trails, excellent spring training stadiums, luxurious resorts, and year-round sunshine.  But did you know there are amazing day trips from Phoenix that are just hours outside of the city?

Phoenix has plenty to do, but tourists would be missing out if they never adventured out of Phoenix during their time in the Valley of the Sun.

Life as an Arizona Native

I have been lucky enough to live in Arizona my entire life. As a little girl, I have fond memories of traveling to northern Arizona with my family to play in the snow and go camping. As an adult, I have taken dozens of day trips from Phoenix to go hiking, swimming, kayaking, and adventuring in my home state.

Okay, now here’s the crazy part: despite all the day trips I have taken throughout Arizona in my lifetime, I still haven’t even scratched the surface of discovering all that Arizona has to offer!

Arizona’s Diversity

Arizona is a diverse state filled with mountains, deserts, lakes, and forests, all within just a few hours of each other. Some months, you can lounge by the pool, and two hours later, you can be driving through the snow.

Arizona’s diversity offers dozens of exciting, adventurous day trips just a few hours outside of Phoenix.

Whether you’ve lived in the valley of the sun for your whole life or are planning a trip soon, you should make these day trips a priority while you are in Phoenix!

My Four Favorite Day Trips from Phoenix

1. Sedona

Famous for its stunning red rocks and breathtaking views, Sedona is an excellent location for hiking, biking, or an iconic pink Jeep tour!

Sedona is full of Native American art and history, which offers a glimpse into the area’s New Age culture.

After a day of exploring, peruse the shops along Sedona’s main street for minerals, jewelry, and other unique keepsakes.

2. Prescott

Prescott is a quaint western town just over an hour and a half drive from Phoenix. Surrounded by beautiful pine trees and lakes, Prescott is an excellent location to go fishing, kayaking, or paddle boarding.

Downtown Historic Prescott is full of history, making it fun to stroll around and explore. You can visit hotels, saloons, and restaurants dating back to the 1800s.

Prescott surprisingly has an impressive coffee shop scene. If you’re a coffee lover (like me!), visit some of the awesome coffee shops in Prescott.

3. Flagstaff

Surrounded by the world’s largest ponderosa pine forest, Flagstaff has something for everyone during all four seasons of the year. Just a two-hour drive from Phoenix, Flagstaff is a refreshing escape from the desert heat.

During the summer and fall, Flagstaff is an excellent spot for camping. Choose from a diverse selection of campgrounds and RV parks. Enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, and other outdoor activities while you camp.

During the winter and spring, Flagstaff is a popular getaway for winter snow play and sports like snowboarding and skiing.

After exploring the great outdoors, wander into Downtown Flagstaff to enjoy a drink and a delicious bite to eat at one of Flagstaff’s many local restaurants.

4. Jerome

Jerome is the largest ghost town in America. With such a unique history, Jerome is an intriguing place to explore during a day trip from Phoenix.

Jerome is built on the side of a hill at an elevation of 5,000 feet and offers spectacular views of the Verde Valley, Sedona, and the mountain tops in Flagstaff.

After visiting Jerome’s historic sites and museums, head into town to visit a few of Jerome’s iconic restaurants and shops, like the Haunted Hamburger!
